Atocha station is a railway complex located near the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, in Madrid (Spain). It serves as a railway junction, making it the station with the highest passenger traffic in the country. The station started out as a simple railway yard (opened in 1851), which was expanded to become the Mediodía station (opened in 1892), initially owned by the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Zaragoza y Alicante (abbreviated to MZA).2 The steady growth in long, medium and short-distance passengers gradually transformed it into the complex three-station railway node that it is known as today.
