The Märkisches Viertel (i.e. 'Brand district') is a district of Berlin, belonging to the Reinickendorf district and located in the northern part of the city. The eastern and southern borders of the Märkisches Viertel were marked by the Berlin Wall, so the district assumed an important role in East Berlin. Since 2001, the Märkisches Viertel, separated from Wittenau, has become an independent district.
